Darts at The Drive    25 October 2011

Week 3 of the Wanstead CC Darts at Overton Drive took place this evening with 8 pairs split in to 2 groups. The draw for partners was nervously awaited by the 16 individuals that participated.  It all seemed like a very intense atmosphere until our hero JP Jnr arrived, this lifted the mood in the crowd.

Group A was proving to be the easier group as the team of Kishen Velani and Alan Lord were the first team through having won all 3 of their matches.  The only question left was who would be joining them in the semis and it certainly was not the Aussie pairing of Ron and James Fitzgerald as both of them lost all three matches.  Ironically they were the last to arrive and the first to be knocked out (taxi for the Fitzy's).  The pairing of Sam McGrath and Rakesh showed potential after they won their first match but that would be their only joy as they lost their next two.  This meant that Jahansher Akbar and Sam Velani were the runners up with 2 wins out of the 3 games.  Group B was a much closer group but in the end Maureen and Jack Lord topped the group with Mahesh and Brandon coming runners up due to the head to head rule, both won 2 out 3. Hats off to Tony and Zac McGrath and the pairing of Nigel Baldwin (passing a late fitness test and turning up in the correct equipment for the correct event) and Henry Chambers who unlike the Aussies actually won a game each.

On to the Semi Finals

The hot favourites Kish and Alan were handed what the pundits thought was the toughest of their assignments in attempting to get through Maureen and Jack to book a place in the final.  They did it in style and continued their 100% record whilst Maureen and Jack were left blaming each other for their loss, I would be very surpised if Jack got fed last evening (or even made it home).  The other semi final was on paper a close contest with Sam and Jhanghsir only narrowly (quite comfortably) defeating Mahesh and previous weeks winner Brandon.

The Final

Jahansher Akbar was so confident that we was part of a winning team that he made his parents come and watch him play in the final.  He and his partner Uncle Sam certainly upped their game but Alan and Kishen (who was playing his biggest match of the year in all sports so far) won in great style.  We have not seen or heard from Jahansher since. It is difficult to say that Kish and Alan did not deserve to be the champions as they won all 5 of their games on the night.

A big thank you to all who participated and officiated (JP Jnr and Nigel Baldwin) for making the evening possible and congratulations to the winners Alan Lord and Kishen Velani.  Week 4 will take place in a fortnight (Tuesday 8th November) at Overton Drive for a 7pm sharp start.  If you are interested then please drop me an email and I will reserve a place for you (adnan.akram@hotmail.co.uk), people with all abilities are welcome... Surely you cant be any worse then the Fitzgeralds?
