Wanstead vs Ilford
Essex Premier League 3 September S Theat
The first eleven ended the season with a resounding victory by seven wickets, having dismissed Ilford for 139, despite dropping innumerable catches and hitting the stumps with a no-ball.
One wicket fell to Maurice Chambers and the rest were shared between the spinners. There were impressive returns for Fayyaz Khan (9-3-21-4), Joe Ellis-Grewal (10-1-36-3) and Rehan Hassan (6.1-0-15-2).
The early demise of John Chambers put the onus on Arfan Akram to lead the victory charge, which he did with due diligence, ending with an unbeaten 73. He was aided by Christian Burgess who was 30 minutes on nought but went on to score 27. Adnan came and went like the proverbial ripple on a stream, and Mervyn Westfield put his mark on the proceedings with four sixes in his score of 26 not out.
The team ended the season second again when it appeared the title was their's for the taking and when they had been considered by many the best all-round team. Losing or drawing against clubs near the bottom of the league unfortunately scuppered their chances.
