Three In a Row for Young Herons

Sunday 28 August    Ford County Ground

Wanstead Under 16s won the Matchplay title at the County Ground, Chelmsford beating a very talented, young Chelmsford side.  Batting first, we lost two early wickets but a match winning partnership between Kishen Velani and Ismail Dar turned the game.   Kishen was eventually out for a rapid 63 but Ismail carried his bat for beautifully crafted, well deserved century.    All the middle order batsman contributed to carry us to a total of 232 for 6.

Chelmsford started the chase of this challenging total with gusto, both opening batsmen reaching 50s.  They never quite managed to keep up with the required rate, however, and as the overs went by, had to take more and more chances which inevitably cost them  wickets.   Eventually Chelmsford fell 30 runs short, so the Herons were champions for a third consecutive year.

Wanstead become the first club ever to win the title for three consecutive seasons and this team finally laid to rest a bogey that has jinxed us.    They become the first Wanstead U16 team to win the Matchplay the year after they won the National U15 Championship.   All our previous attempts had failed.
