Young Guns Shoot Down The Wells

Wanstead B vs Woodford Wells A    4 Feb 2012

The young guns of Wanstead B took on the might of a primarily Woodford Wells 1st XI at Bancroft’s on Saturday morning in Arctic conditions.  The Wells won the toss and put Wanstead into bat.  Rehan Hassan and Ismail Dar got us off to a solid start before Ismail was caught behind with the score on 24.  Jahansher Akbar and Jay Williams also made good contributions but poor Adam Lord was run out without facing a ball!  Rehan who had earlier been retired on 25 returned to bat with James Fitzgerald and the pair put on a final wicket partnership of 40 with Rehan run out on the last ball of the innings for a brilliant 60 and James surprising the capacity crowd with 18* to close the innings on 112.

The Herons’ bowlers were ready to defend a good par score and they didn’t disappoint.  James opened the bowling and had Mark Webb caught by Ismail off the first ball he faced!  Rehan followed up with a wicket from his first over thanks to a lovely catch by Adam Lord and by the time the opening bowlers finished their spells the Wells were 4-45 off 6 overs, James taking 3 wickets.  Adam then came into the attack and with blistering pace cleaned up the Wells taking 2-3 off 5 balls, both wickets bowled, including the prize wicket of Rory Ellison and the Wells were all out for 48.

Congratulations to the young guns on a great all round performance.

(We hope readers will allow us this little dose of triumphalism, but it was the Wells.  Ed)
