Open Darts Championship

13 Jan 2012

The first ever Wanstead Darts Open Championship saw 8 teams compete for this privileged prize.  The club was delighted to see James Foster (current Essex Captain and a Wanstead CC member) participate and support the event.  He was part of the Fantastic Four team that also included former first team club captain Jon Hinton as well as Dave Richardson and Graeme Webb.  The fantastic four certainly lived up to their name as they cruised to the top of Group B having won all three of their matches.  They were joined in the Semi’s by Dart Vader who were inspired by the clubs 2nd team captain Jon Cade and Hero CC’s very own Joseph Palmer.  The other two members were Joe Ellis-Grewal who travelled from Leeds to participate in the event and a very impressive Joseph Coffee.  Bulls Eye (Ron/James/Tony Burgess/Henry Chambers) were definitely off the mark as they only managed to defeat the team that finished bottom of the group in the McGraths (Sam/Tony/Zac/Ivor).  In Group A the Baldwins were definitely the team to beat and no one did in their group, the only question left was who would join them in to the semis?

The Guji Gangsters were inspired by Rakesh and Hero CC’s very own Mahesh Velani as they guided Sam and Mani to the Runners Up.  3 wise men and a little baby proved none the wiser as they finished bottom.  Classic case of to much rum drunk by Sanjay, Steve and Dave Ramdial.  But the most disappointed person of the day award goes to Alan Lord.  He was so confident of victory he asked for the trophy to be sent to his home beforehand.  He not only lost every game but he also lost to the Maureen’s Monsters, a team that included Alan’s sons, wife and brother in law.

Semis

The Baldwins met Dart Vader, the match ebbed and flowed, but the more experienced Baldwins prevailed and managed to achieve their place in the final. The Fantastic Four met a tough and stubborn opposition in the Guji Gangsters. The underogs inspired by Mahesh Velani went close but the Fantastic Four were a little more clinical and this got them over line and in to the Final.

Final

The two undefeated teams on the night met in the final.  First blood went to the Baldwins as Steve and Uncle Louie won the first match.  However, Captain Dave and a very sober Graeme Webb levelled the score one a piece.  This then meant we had a foursome play off.  In true heroic style Dave aka Nugget led the Fantastic Four to become the first ever Wanstead Darts Open Champions. Congrats to them but a great effort from Nigel, Grahame, Louie and Steve Baldwin as they contributed to a hugely successful and enjoyable evening. Big thanks to Nigel and Mani for placing all the boards, lights food etc for the event.
