Darts at The Drive    Week 4    8 November

Once again there was a wonderful turnout for a great evening.

The draw threw up some interesting pairs.   When your luck is down, your luck is down: poor Maureen was paired with Ron Fitzgerald.  Uncle Mani and Henry were by far the most experienced pair, whilst Brandon and James Fitzgerald were the most youthful.  Adam had the very doubtful honour of being with Mahesh, whilst this week's new boys Andrew 'Jazz Hands' Osborn and Sanjay 'High Tower' Batra were together.  This left Adnan and Jon Cade (who was far from pleased at this pairing) as partners.

Andrew Osborn "warming up"

Group A constituted of 3 teams, so everyone played each other twice.  The red hot favourites of Nigel/Alan stormed to victory in their first match over Maureen and what can only be described as the deepest voice in the world Ron Fitzgerald, whilst in the 2nd match Maureen/Ron beat the misfits JC/Adnan.  With Alan/Nigel winning their next 2 matches it pretty much meant that Cadey needed to beat Maureen/Ron in their 2nd encounter of the night.  There was only one way this would be possible and that was if JC found a new partner... Thankfully a new partner arrived... And even more fortunate was that we were playing darts and not cricket because his knight in a shining forehead was Shoab 'pinch blocker' Iqbal.  They avenged the previous loss.

The last game in group A gave the new pairing a window of opportunity to get through to the KO stages of the tournament, all they needed to do was beat Nigel/Alan.  It was all to much for JC who sat this match out to allow Hassan-Ali to play.  They lost a closely fought battle and therefore 2 teams remained on equal points.  To decide who the runner up of the group would be, we had a "one dart closest to the bulls-eye" play-off.  To everyone's disappointment Maureen was out but to everyone's joy this meant Ron was also out.  JC/Shoab were through as the runners up with Nigel/Alan taking top spot from group A with a 100% record.

Groub B had 4 teams so every pair played each other once.  This was a group full of surprises as the record youngest pair of James and Brandon stormed to victory in their first match over Adam and Mahesh.  The slightly more senior pairing of Mani and Henry also fell to the youthful James and Brandon.  Sanjay and Andrew were also victorious in their first match as they defeated Mahesh and Adam.  This all meant that Henry/Mani and Mahesh/Adam were playing in a must win match... Mahesh and Adam won.  The two undefeated pairs in the group met each other in the next match and once again the surprise package of Sanjay/Andrew defeated James/Brandon.  The last match of the group proved to be a bit of a dead rubber as Sanjay/Andrew defeated Mani/Henry which meant both teams kept their 100% record.  Runners up were James/Brandon and winners of Group B were Andrew/Sanjay.

Semi Finals:  Alan/Nigel, the winners of group A took on the young runners up of Group B James/Brandon.  Taking no prisoners, they proved why they were favourites as they stormed to victory with a double 16 finish.  Hats off to James/Brandon for getting as far as they did.  On the subject of over-achieving, Andrew was definitely sure he would not last long in the tournament, since he made his mum pick him up 15 minutes after he arrived!!  Thankfully Pauline waited patiently whilst her son and Sanjay ploughed on to the final with a victory over what was a rejuvenated pairing of Shoab and JC. The victory was completed in style as the Bhangra Beat completed with a double 3 finish.

Final:
Both teams came in to the final with a 100% record, so it was hard to disagree they did not deserve to be there.  Nigel was definitely the form man during the evening but Alan decided to step up to the plate (I think it's the oche - Ed) and finished proceedings with a double 16 to complete a well deserved win.
