Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Slow Coaches v South Loughton on Tue 08 May 2018 at 6pm
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won Don't ask how
Match report
It is with much regret that I report that the Slowcoaches summer season has begun. So from 6pm every week until sometime in August some old men descend on Overton Drive and pretend to play cricket for 40 overs.
It was reported earlier this month that these match reports have become essential reading for all of the players in the club. I have been led to understand that its the unbiased reporting that has given them the elevated status needed for the essential reading. One has to take pride out of this but also offer thanks to the players for providing such a rich batting/bowling and fielding show that allows the reports to have so much to say.
So, to the match, it was a pleasure to see the familiar faces of the opposition Sough Loughton who came and played with a great attitude. From the beginning they portrayed themselves as consummate professionals. Before the match was to start they were in a group practising catches working out a strategy. All of the Wanstead team were seated very comfortably on the benches sipping a beer or having a rest from their busy day. None appeared concerned or even changed into their whites in preparation for the match. In all honesty it appeared that the Slowcoaches were quite upset and their confidence was being tested of the sight of a team practising.
Not being fully prepared for what followed, the Slowcoaches skipper aka Joe Palmer Snr asked if the Skipper of South Loughton would like to bat first. He said no, in response and this surprised Joe for a few minutes until someone asked "Joe, shall we prepare to bat?", "who is opening?"
As it happens, Joe was well ahead of us and had nominated Chris and Andrew to open. For those who have read previous reports they will be aware of the match winning partnership of Rosie and Jim and believe it or not, Chris and Andrew are certainly up there with them for opening in style. The score board only ticked over to 30 runs in 11 overs I hear you shout and you are absolutely correct that they set the tone for the rest to come in and smack 100 runs in 9 overs. Without that slow start the others would not have had a target. Well after the 20 over and a few wickets the Slowcoaches left the field after a few players have shown their mettle and skill of hitting the ball over the boundary. Thankfully the boundary was short.
So with a total set , the Slowcoaches take to the field to defend and post their first win for the season.
