Barking CC U19 v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Under 19 on Thu 13 Jul 2017 at 17.30
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won by 136 runs
Match report
With Feroze trapped LBW for 1 on an unpredictable wicket in the third over followed by two more quick casualties, Wanstead were left on 17 for 3 in the 5th. Aryan and Finlay started the repair job, reaching 53 before Finlay (22 off 19) toed a cut to point. Manvir (7 off 8) and Jayden (15 off 7) applied themselves but at 85 for 6 in the 15th over, matters were still looking distinctly unhealthy. At this point, no one watching could not have at least entertained the prospect of a Barking victory.
However, the value of Aryan's innings was about to be revealed. Having clung to his wicket for 10 overs with little to show for it apart from his survival, he started to play much more aggressively, reaching an undefeated 40 off 49 by the close. Partnered by a pugnacious Mustafa (20 off 14), keen to make amends for his failure last week, their excellent 63 run closing partnership took Wanstead to 148 for 6. On this wicket, an excellent and very defendable score.
Once again we knew that if we bowled and fielded to our ability, this match could be won. What no-one anticipated was that Jayden (4-0-9-5) and Brandon (3.2-2-3-5 plus a hat-trick ) would both turn in quite extraordinary performances, either of which would have turned a match but together were simply unstoppable.
The Barking bowling was very respectable and we found ourselves in a difficult position - until the 16-20th overs of the Wanstead innings, the advantage clearly lay with our hosts. Where we found ourselves at a distinct advantage was that we had seamers who were significantly quicker than anything the Barking batters were used to. The result certainly does not reflect the energy, enthusiasm and potential of the Barking side who I suspect are very capable of springing some surprises of their own.
Once again, we should draw confidence from the fact that our lower order are able to engineer a respectable total after the failure of the top order. We bat deep - and so far, we have needed to! Much as last week, this also confirms the potential of the bowling attack - or at least the seamers. Spin has been underutilised so far and I believe we will need this element of our game more and more as we progress.
Batting honours clearly go to Aryan who held together a brittle batting order that showed signs of imploding. Bowling honours should be shared but in the interests of promoting future competition, Brandon gets the nod for his hat-trick and better economy. Jayden...got to do better..lol
Congratulations all...but seriously, I'd prefer less drama!
