Guilford U19 - NW U19 T20 SE REGIONAL FINAL v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Under 19 on Sun 18 Sep 2016 at 15.30
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
and so to he SE Regional final against Guildford, the Surrey champions who comfortably won a low scoring semi final.
Losing the toss (again! Can't we train for this?) Wanstead were unsurprisingly asked to bowl. The one comfort was that our semi final had finished little over 30 minutes earlier and so we were already warmed up and focussed on our fielding. As before, Jayden opened the bowling, this time with rather more accuracy than the last game delivering his 4 overs for only 15 runs. No wickets though. Brandon, on the other hand, captured the two Guildford openers in his 3 overs, conceding only 13 runs himself. At 23 for 2 after the power play, Wanstead were already in control. A brave effort by Jonathon French (13 off 25) and Benji Thomas (35 off 33)brought Guildford their only substantial partnership for the third wicket but when French was caught with the score on 43, the innings faltered. Wickets continued to fall until an 8th wicket stand between Tom Percival (11 off 15) and Oscar Martin (16 off 18) dragged the Guilford total to 100 for 7 off their 20 overs. Given that we had managed to reach 150 a few hours earlier on the same pitch, all we wanted was a strong start.
On this occasion, it was Waseem who fell early falling for 4 in the 5th over. However, with the score reaching a healthy 41 for 1 after the power play, Feroze (50 off 48) and Bilal (22 off 23) never really looked to be in trouble as they took the total to 84 for 2 when Bilal fell. Feroze retired shortly afterwards at 94 and Saurav and Naail took us over the line to 102 for 3 in 17 overs. Another comfortable win inside the distance.
Highlights: Brandon's 2 for 13 - remember this is a 15 year old dismissing Academy players several years older than him, 3 wickets for Saurav demonstrating his all round potential, another blinding stumping by Aryan, claiming the wicket of the only Guilford batter to develop any momentum and the mature, well-paced partnership between Feroze and Bilal that put matters really beyond doubt.
Once again, the team showed how strong they were in the field, frustrating the efforts of the Guilford batters to develop any momentum. The confidence that the players take from their collective performance has become truly impressive and the challenge next year for this squad will be to maintain the standards they have set for themselves. Finally, I would like to pay special thanks to Manvir for turning up to act as third man for both matches and to congratulate Misem on utterly disregarding the bowling tactics agreed on before the match, namely to rotate the bowlers more frequently. Why? He chose to push his luck with the seamers because Jayden and Brandon were bowling really tightly conceding only 28 runs between them in 7 overs and as a bonus, were taking wickets. What's not to like about that?
Many, many thanks to all the squad, to the senior players who have given their time to coach and support the squad, to the many umpires who stood for us and to Essex for organising this tournament. Lastly, my thanks to the parents who have put up with my decisions and have helped to make 2016 a memorable season and one worthy of our 150th anniversary!
