Oakfield Parkonians U19 - Essex NatWest FINAL v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Under 19 on Sun 11 Sep 2016 at 15.00
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won by 49 runs
Match report
...and so to the Final. This was bound to be a keenly contested match following a very close Group match earlier in the season, won by the slender margin of 2 runs by Wanstead. OP had also just won their semi-final against Goresbrook whose 2 busloads of parents and spectators brought an enthusiastic if understandably partisan presence to their match!
Winning the toss (for the first time I believe) Wanstead elected to bat in the belief that the wicket would play best at the start of the match. Not so...this was an unexpectedly slow track and scoring proved much harder than anticipated. After a bright start, Waseem mistimed a cut to the covers with the score at 18 and Bilal joined Feroze at the wicket. Adapting to the conditions, both batters carefully constructed an 80 run stand for the second wicket. When Bilal fell with the total on 98 for 2 at the end of the 15th over, the scene was once again set for a change of gear. Briskly struck contributions from Jayden (12 off 8) and Finlay (11 off 8)and a handful of extras brought the Wanstead total to a modest 144 for 6. However, despite the jubilation from OP, with a strong spin attack, we felt confident that this would prove to be a defendable total.
Once again the opposition started strongly, matching and even exceeding Wanstead's early run rate, helped substantially by several early dropped catches. However, once the Wanstead spinners were in place, the OP runs started to dry up and, more importantly, wickets started to fall at regular intervals as they struggled to stay in touch. By the 16th over their cause was all but lost with the chase stranded at 75 for 9 and the innings closed on 95 all out in the last over.
Two excellent performances from a very strong Wanstead side, particularly since both matches saw periods when the run of play went against them. With the experience they have gained over the last two years, they absorbed the pressure, confident that our all round skills would prevail. And so it proved...the players and the rest of the squad should be really proud of being part of one of the strongest age group squads we have ever had and, in my opinion at least, the best fielding side in the club. Thank you all for all your efforts...just one more weekend to go!
