Stanmore U19 - NW U19 T20 SE REGIONAL SEMI FINAL v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Under 19 on Sun 18 Sep 2016 at 12.30
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won by 65 runs
Match report
For the first time, the SE region organised a Regional Final in which the winning U19 sides from Essex, Middlesex, Kent and Surrey would compete, albeit for no more than bragging rights. By retaining the Essex U19 title, we qualified for this exciting last stage to the season.
Arriving around 11, we found the first match well under way with Guildford (Middlesex) chasing a modest 96 set by Hanley Country Club (Kent). That it took a strong Guildford side almost 18 overs to run it down immediately suggested that the wicket would be slow and potentially tricky.
Losing the toss, we were pleasantly surprised to be put in to bat. The loss of Feroze for 7 in the 5th over feathering a ball that kept low to the keeper only underlined how tricky conditions might be as the power play ended with the total on only 28. Waseem and Bilal stepped up to carry the score to 62 before Bilal suffered the same fate in the 11th over, bringing Saurav to the crease. With 94 on the board, Waseem (50 from 44) was retired giving Saurav (32 from 25) and Faheem (29 from 18) the opportunity to build what was the most effective, if not the biggest, partnership of the innings. The remaining contribution and extras brought the final Wanstead total to a very creditable 150 for 5, a total we felt should be very defendable in the conditions.
Stanmore started well, easily matching and indeed outpacing the Wanstead innings until the 11th over when the introduction of the Wanstead spinners brought the control we have begun to expect. As runs dried up, the scoreboard pressure began to tell and wickets started to fall at regular intervals. Only Mohammed Rizvi (31 from 41) came to terms with the bowling but without any assistance, Stanmore were unable to build any substantial partnerships and ended their innings on 85 all out in the last over. A 65 run win for Wanstead.
This match was significant for several reasons. Firstly, despite the early loss of Feroze, the batters did not panic in the tricky conditions and built solid partnerships, the key to building a big total - and 150 on this wicket was a BIG total. Very few boundaries were scored (6 4s and 1 six) although Saurav proved they were within reach. This was a wicket to play groundstrokes on, finding the gaps and running well between wickets - this was the basis that Saurav and Faheem built their excellent and intelligent partnership on.
Highlights: Waseem's steady and invaluable 50, the partnership between Saurav and Faheem, generally excellent fielding, two stumpings from Aryan and yet another 3 wickets from Misem.
