Frenford v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club BU15s on Fri 21 Dec 2012 at 7.15 pm
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won by 61 runs
Match report
T'was the Friday before Christmas and the typical English weather was prevailing. This tale begins before the 7.15 starting point.
Earlier that day the coach had received an email asking if we would play a friendly preceding the league match. After much frantic texting and emailing, the friendly was accepted and Wanstead A arrived at Bancrofts at 6.15....with nothing open. The sports hall was in darkness but the teams had arrived. Then the caretaker came in and all was well. We descend the stairs and enter the sports hall and find our friendly opponents are Woodford Wells.
This being a friendly, roles were swapped around, Inky is our new keeper, Finlay Ferguson is our left arm spinner and Rahib and Nick are promoted to opening bowlers. With this in place the match commences and Wells go on to make 93 off their 12 overs. A very reasonable score.
Wanstead A continued with the friendly rules, so Nick and Rahib opened the batting, followed by Finlay F, then Inky and Sheri being the tail. The beginning of the innings was quite quiet runs wise. The hit ball was finding the Wells fielders with ease and so runs were being difficult to find. By the sixth over Wanstead were up against it, way behind the run rate and facing a defeat again at the hands of Wells. Friendly or not, another defeat was not what the team wanted especially as straight after this match was our league match v Frenford, who are a team that have had a couple of really good victories against strong opposition.
Okay, we're behind on the run rate and we are 5 down needing thirty or so runs off of 3 overs, its not looking good. Sheri is last man standing and Wells have their tails up. They smell another victory over Wanstead. Sheri had different ideas. With some outstanding shots Sheri smashed and played elegant shots his way to a last over victory, which then set the tone for the next match.
With Sheri having his eye in so well, it was decided that Wanstead should bat first (should they win the toss). Well Finlay CB lost the toss and Wanstead were put into bat.
What I've forgotten to mention is that in the preceding match Rahib had picked up an injury whilst bowling so was not able to play, so Wanstead were playing with 5 instead of a compliment of 6. Whats more important is that Rahib is one of the important support bowlers, so was going to be missed.
So to the match. The batting choice was the right thing to do, by the 6th over Wanstead were 68 for 0 and cruising. Sheri and Inky had retired the two Finlay's both added to the total, Finlay CB however was caught spectacularly on the boundary, a catch that will be remembered for a long time. In the meanwhile, Nick was batting his way to a great score. All told, the 12 overs finished with Wanstead on a total of 121, a good score to defend. However, Frenford are a team that can chase down such score, so Wanstead with a man down knew that things had to be done properly.
The run rate was 10 an over, high, but not unachievable if a couple of overs where the back wall was hit and the total would be in sight.
opening the bowling was Inky, 5 runs from his first over. Nick is up next, 7 runs, 3rd over 4 runs, fourth over 2 runs. In other words, Frenford were falling behind in the run chase, so much so by the half way point they were on 40, 82 runs required in the last 6 overs. Bowling was tight however some fielding mistakes allowed Frenford a sniff of victory. However, tight bowling and excellent fielding saw Wanstead see off Frenford in the 10 over with Frenford only scoring 60 runs. Another excellent victory. Well done boys.
