Match report
“ I am a visual learner. This is no good to me.” You have to have a thick skin to be a Wanstead coach as one of the parents adopted the aforementioned Luddite dismissal of my carefully researched, computer aided directions to Winchmore Hill. So Tony Mcgrath, for it was he, would you rather the system of old where directions were written on the back of a cigarette packet and you were instructed to turn left at the Spar supermarket, only to discover that it had relocated to another part of England. Anyway now that I got that off my chest everybody turned up on time at the correct venue so something must be working.
As Len said Winchmore Hill is a lovely setting for cricket with magnificent facilities, including a fantastic set of nets. The ubiquitous dark clouds accompanied Will to the middle as he proceeded to win the toss. Spike opened the bowling and comprehensively bowled one of the opening batsman with a delicious inswinger . The team bowled pretty steadily with Basil in particular bowling a very tight line and length, resulting in his first wicket for the club. Sam and Harry bring variety to the attack, both bowling left arm over the wicket and Sam was rewarded with a wicket when he managed to get one to straighten up and bowl the opposition’s number four batsman. The fielding was reliable as ever with Jay taking his customary catch. Darren fielded well in the deep and Will produced two excellent direct hits to run out two of their batsmen. Without a recognized wicketkeeper Oliver Graham volunteered to perform the role and duly proceeded to make some telling interventions behind the stumps. Our opponents managed to get 89 which did not seem too daunting a total at the time.
Our innings got off to an inauspicious start, reflected by the scoreboard, which stood at 0-2 after two overs. Daniel remained calm and together with Spike steadied the ship, resulting in a very important partnership. Spike, after a circumspect start, hit some thumping boundaries and suddenly we managed to get back on target. Daniel was stumped in an endeavour to force the pace. Conor came in and with Spike produced a lovely partnership, only to be dashed when Spike was run out in a quest for quick runs. Conor hit a sumptuous drive along the ground to the cover boundary. Unfortunately he was bowled next ball . Despite the valiant efforts of Adam, Darren and Jay, who all batted well, the run rate proved elusive and we fell 11 short.
Although we lost the game I feel there were a lot of positives to come out of it. All round there were several notable performances by our bowlers, fielders and batsmen, with everybody making some kind of positive contribution. An abiding memory will be our animated scorer. It appears that the days of Bill Frindall remaining in a sedentary position during the hours of play are long gone. Our “Bill,” a.k.a. Brian, was like a jack- in- the- box, circumnavigating the boundary edge whilst balancing the scorebook precariously on his lap. Is it a manifestation of our inability as a society to relax or did the opposition not provide a chair?
