Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club 1st XI v Ilford on Sat 08 May 2010 at 12:30
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won By 5 Runs
Match report
In cold dreary conditions with occasional driving rain Wanstead won an exciting tense contest by a mere five runs, thus gaining twenty points to he opposition's seven. The entertainment was of the highest quality and deserved an audience far greater than the few hardy souls who ventured out. Despite the conditions no breaks in play occurred and officials and players are to be congratulated on their resilience. The pitch played true and offered scope to bat and ball, and almost 600 runs were scored for the loss of 17 wickets in the 100 overs.
Ilford won the toss and inserted Wanstead, who got off to blistering start against some wayward opening bowling. John Chambers rather hogged the strike and scored 32 in twenty minutes before being bowled by a yorker. Arfan Akram, who took an hour to face as many balls as John had done in his twenty minutes, batted well before offering a soft catch to mid-off. Milan Patel also gifted his wicket. Meanwhile Adnan Akram played quietly and sensibly and after a Mervyn Westfield duck he settled into a productive stand of 77 with Shahid Saeed who scored an attractive 38. Matt Smith showed off his batting skills, and both he and Adnan reached their half-centuries. Some lusty blows from Arif Saeed and Fayyaz Khan saw Wanstead post an impressive score of 296 for 8.
The strong Ilford batting line-up was undaunted by the task ahead and after Maz Mali fell to a beautiful slower ball from Maurice Chambers and Merv dismissed A Nawaz, a very productive stand of 108 took Ilford to 168-2 in the thirty-fourth over, an apparent launching pad for a straightforward victory. M Ibrahim left for 53 and gave way to Shoaib Malik's brother, drafted in as overseas player. Clearly very talented, he played an odd innings comprising three straight sixes off Fayyaz and a series of edges, slices etc with the ball failing to find a fielder. He amassed 48 off 26 balls before another rash shot sent the ball spiralling high before descending into the safe hands of John Chambers.
This wicket fell at 254 with six overs remaining. With Gurdip Kandola at the other end moving steadily on to a deserved century, the pair should ave easily reached the target had Malik played a little more judiciously. As it was, the remaining batsmen were faced with some good professional bowling from Maurice, aided by Arif and Merv.
A catch by Westfield on the boundary and three run-outs, including Kandola, saw Ilford reduced to needing 11 from the last over, entrusted to Fayyaz. With his vast experience of dealing with such situations, he gave away only three runs plus a couple of byes from the final ball.
The margin of victory (5 runs) could be put into perspective by the six runs saved on the boundary by three outstanding pieces of fielding by Adnan. Wanstead could easily have lost and in the words of the old cliche, his was a victory snatched from the jaws of defeat.
