Brentwood v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club BU16s on Mon 31 May 2010 at 13.00
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won by 44 runs
Match report
The 4th game of the Matchplay group stage was against Brentwood. Both sides were unbeaten going into this match and it promised to be a tight encounter.
On an overcast day, with rain in the air, Wanstead won the toss and elected to bat first. Rehan Hassan and Ayush Singh got off to a good start but never looked totally comfortable against an effective Brentwood new ball attack. Concerns were realised when both openers were out in the space of 10 balls leaving Wanstead on 35 for 2 after 9 overs. However, an outstanding 3rd wicket partnership of 106 between Kishen Velani and Hamza Hussain in just over 13 overs soon put us in a strong position. Kishen was in commanding form, scoring 73 from 61 balls before steering a cut shot directly to backward point. Hamza, who played a supporting role in the partnership, then took over as the main run scorer in another excellent partnership of 59, this time with Jonathan Das. Hamza was eventually out for a tremendous 54, his innings including an ‘unusual’ hook shot for 6 that thudded into the site screen directly behind the batsman! Jonathan Das was now into his stride but unfortunately his innings was cut short by a direct hit run out when he had reached 37. After that Wanstead lost wickets at regular intervals trying to score quick runs and eventually finished on 255 for 9 after 40 overs. This was a good score but it had looked likely to be a lot more than this when Kishen and Hamza were batting so well.
The team talk at the tea interval emphasised the need to bowl tightly for the opening overs to put pressure on the Brentwood batsmen. This ‘cunning plan’ was looking somewhat threadbare as Brentwood rushed to 36 without loss after 6 overs. Despite the run rate Greg Summers had bowled very well and his endeavours were rewarded with the first Brentwood wicket in the 10th over. His opening spell of 6 overs returned figures of 1 for 17, which was excellent considering that there were 6 extras in this.
The introduction of spin (Jahansher Akbar) in the 13th over was immediately successful and this brought Tom Oakley to the crease. His was the outstanding innings of the day and he played a pivotal role in the next 3 partnerships. The third of these took the score from 129 to 185 and he was particular severe on any over pitched or short deliveries. Whilst Ayush rotated his spin bowlers very effectively it wasn’t until he reintroduced pace in the 32nd that things turned in Wanstead’s favour. With his second ball Giri dismissed Tom Oakley for 89. There was a collective sigh of relief from the Wanstead supporters as, despite a required run rate of 9 runs an over, there was a still every possibility of Brentwood chasing down the 256 required for victory while Oakley was at the crease. Following his departure Brentwood were only able to score 25 runs in the last 8 overs and they eventually finished on 211 for 8.
This was an excellent result against a good Brentwood side whose opening 4 batsmen will pose problems for any bowling attack in this competition. Our score of 255 was 20 or 30 runs less than it should have been considering the fact that we were 122 for 2 at the halfway stage. We must focus on trying to score off every ball when we are in this kind of position rather than relying on the big shots all the time. Similarly, when bowling we must learn to concentrate on the tried and tested principles of line and length, especially in the early overs of the innings to ensure that we retain control of the game. The fielding throughout was of an exceptionally high standard – a special mention to Ismail Dar here for his efforts as sweeper on the cover boundary. Ayush’s captaincy in this game was also inspired at times – every bowling change he made appeared to reap immediate dividends! Whilst there are still areas for improvement (aren't there always!) there are a lot of positives to be taken from this hard fought 44 run victory.
