Match report Wanstead started their 2010 Matchplay campaign with a victory against Saffron Walden on a very cold, blustery showery Bank Holiday Monday - typical Bank Holiday weather really.

Having won the toss Wanstead elected first and found runs hard to come by against a very effective opening pace attack. The third wicket fell at 47 during the 14th over at which time Jonathan Das came out to join Hamza Hussain in the middle. Together they put on an outstanding partnership of 115 runs at more than 8 runs an over to turn the innings around. Both were run out in the space of 2 overs but the middle order kept the momentum going well to enable Wanstead to reach a competitive 234 for 7.

Saffron Walden found run scoring very difficult against a bowling attack that showed excellent control throughout. This discipline was exemplified by Giri Rathakrishnan's spell of 7 overs for 9 runs - a terrific performance. The bowlers were well supported by the fielding which was good throughout. Saffron Walden eventually finished on 139 for 7, a winning margin of 95 runs.

This was a solid performance from a strong, well balanced team. There are areas to build on - especially the running between the wickets - but this was a encouraging start to the season. Our next game is away to Hadleigh & Thundersley on Sunday 9th May.
