Wanstead Defeat Fives by Nine Runs

Wanstead vs Fives & Heronians, 18 February

Winning the toss, the Herons batted first and made a bright start against the even brighter new pink balls, the shade of which matches that of the loxodonta that I keep seeing.

In fact the start was explosive, Kishen Velani taking 20 off the very first over.  But he could not keep this up and was trapped LBW in the second over with the score on 30.  A period of consolidation followed after Jon Das was run out in the 4th over, Adam Lord and Joe Palmer (obviously NOT the Snr variety: Ed) having to rebuild the innings.  Both reached 25 and retired in the 8th over with the score on 90.  Jon Cade and Adnan Akram picked up the scoring with some good running until the latter was out caught in the 11th over, allowing Lord to return with the score on 120-3.  Cade went crazy (he's always been that: Ed) in the final over, smashing consecutive 4s to also reach retirement.  Wanstead ended up on 145-3 with Palmer on 30* and Lord on 38*.

Fives started briskly enough and were 50-0 off 4 overs.  Fortunately for Wanstead, Akram had yet to bowl and his 3 overs yielded 2 wickets for just 15 runs leaving the opponents languishing on 80-2 after 8 overs.  Good spells from Lord and Velani further restricted Fives who were left requiring 50 runs from 3 overs.  In the ensuing hectic chase there was a good catch from Jon "Odd-Bod" Cade on the boundary and also a run-out which left the game in Wanstead's favour.  Fives needed 20 runs off the final over but could only manage 10, thanks to some good, fierce, short bowling from Lord.

Too much absinthe the night before has meant that I can remember very little of the game, so most of the above is pure fantasy.
