Darts at The Drive - Week 5

22 Nov 2011

Darts Week 5    23 November

Week 5 of the Darts at Overton Drive was the most controversial of all the tournaments far.

It began when Alan Lord, wearing his finest bling suit, announced to everyone (that would listen) that he was the winner of the previous 2 Darts Nights.  His confidence was further lifted when he was paired with Tony Burgess.  Nigel Baldwin, on the other hand, was left wondering why he was paired up with Jub James Fitzgerald but, being a true hero, just accepted it as fate.

Group A:  Alan/Tony cruised to top position with 3 wins out 3, whilst Adam and his Uncle Mark (who was celebrating his birthday) finished respectable runners-up.  Maureen, cursing her luck as well as her outspoken partner Henry Chambers, finished third.  Jon Cade and Brandon finished last, but only because they lost all their games.

Group B, as the table shows, was a much closer affair.  Ron and Jack finished top with Rakesh and Nugget running up. Nigel and James finishing 3rd and Sanjay and the itinerant Chris Laas finishing 4th ... out of 4.

  The Table

Newly invented but firmly (and daftly - Ed) applied rules meant that all teams qualified for the knockout stage of the evening.

Quarters:  Alan/Tony, leading group A, came up against the bottom team in group B, Chris/Sanjay.  The upset duly occurred, Alan and Tony lost, and Alan promptly took over cursing duties from his wife Maureen.  Brandon/JC also upset the form book with their first win of the evening, to much rejoicing as it led to the ouster of Aussie Ron.  Nigel and James (son of Aussie) proved that Heroes abd Jubs can't work together and were duly knocked out by Uncle Mark and Adam.  Rakesh and Nugget beat Maureen and Henry, who departed the venue muttering incomprehensibly.

Semis:  The very brave Brandon/JC succumbed to Chris Laas, who said he had never played darts before and played like that too, and Sanjay.  Rakesh/Nugget proved a hurdle too high for Uncle Mark and Adam as they booked their place in the final.

Uglies vs Plug-Uglies:  Before the final there was a one-off game berween the oldest pairing in the universe, Len and Trevor, against the ugliest team, Arfan and Ali.  Although age did come first, it was certainly not against beauty.

Final:  Sanjay, losing finalist the previous evening, was out to go one step further.  He had not only had his own demons to fight but also had the handicap of a South African partner, Chris Laas.  Dave Richardson and Rakesh were deserving winners, keeping Sanjay waiting to win his first trophy as well as continuing to pour doubt in all South Africans minds about whether they can ever win a major event.
